class="dtm-content">It depends on which shop you go to. It varies by shop. I barely had my brakes and rotars changed, and the guy guaranteed the service and parts for 3 months.. class="dtm-content">The BIG misconception is the diagnostics tells what exactly is wrong, it shows what system area needs to be checked further or what readings the particular sensor is seeing or reacting to . Eg a cut wire will make a sensor read low or hi , ie. On a throttle position it will show no input for more fuel upon acceleration but the other sensors will try to compensate and add fuel

MAC ,Snap-on or Matco tools have scanners with the appropreat moduels
If enough people see it, and the price is low enough it will sell.
Advertise in as many places as you can think of.
Also many dealers will sell a vehicle on cinsignment, they usually charge a percentage of the sale price. This saves you the hassle of advertising and selling it yourself, just make sure they know you want to seel it fast and keep the price reasonable.

What the blank are you asking? You can get an Audi repair manual from allgermnparts.com they are from Bentley and are great. I had an 86 5000QT and used it all the time. Dirt does not settle in the bottom of all gas tanks, only if you some how let it get in the system. I put a fuel pump in my car and the tank was clean as the day it was new.

Used parts are always a risk. Most good junk yards no witch parts can be interchanged with other models. class="dtm-content">Most states will give you 30 days to make the repairs and retest. But after that, it’s no go. They have to draw the line somewhere.

The thing is…be very careful where you take your vehicle to get it inspected. I took my 1 year old car from PA to VA and had to get it inspected. It failed the emissions test. So…I drove it all the way back to PA and had the dealership give it a tune-up and test it themselves. The service manager at the car dealership just shook his head in disbelief that the car would have failed emissions the first time. In other words…some inspection stations try to rip people off by saying that a car or truck needs costly repairs before it will pass inspection. They use the inspection process as a means of drumming-up more business…which the car owner really doesn’t need to begin with.

Ask around and find an inspection station where they are honest.

Definitely get a second opinion. Remember, you got this advice from Walmart. It doesn’t hurt to ask a reputable tire dealer. They will tell you over the phone.

The most law concerning tires has to do with chains and snow in the elevations, and the fact that you must have more than 2/32 inches tread on the front and 1/32 inches on the rear tires. Nothing about all 4 must match brand and model… These change all the time it would be ridiculous to enforce, even for California.

Contact an attorney (much as i dislike lawyers!). They had no legal right to keep your car and send it anywhere w/o your consent. Do not cash the check!!! Contact a bloodsucker ASAP!!!
Ps- no work can legally be performed w/o a signed work order showing the intent of the shop as far as work to be performed and a rough estimate. They can spend $100 legally with just a signature and be 10% higher than the estimate too (fla law that is).

Does not matter about a “fair price”. Your brakes are gone, so you could get fined for driving an “unsafe vehicle” and the vehicle is towed to IMPOUND. Or are you waiting till you can’t stop for the oncoming train?(or cliff, or river, or lake, or brick wall)? It won’t be your choice.

You might want to get the car under coated but don’t use the cheapy under coatings , spend the extra cash and get a full warrantied proper under coating done once a year.
To me 900.00 for a belt and atlernator is quite expensive but I do know some alternators are quite pricey and even cost well over 450.00 to 600.00 plus belts can vary some cost well over 100.00 and then labour might be well over 90mins at over 90.00 an hr specialty shops could cost you even more money.
What I would suggest is the whole car’s electrical charging system be fully tested and be cleaned or over hauled.Basically if the alternator went it’s quite possible it caused a strain on the battery and even the starter or a weak starter or battery caused the alternator to over work.
Best thing to do is really look and check the basic things you can with your own eyes.Example check to see if the battery posts are rusty or corroded and the batterry terminal connectors and any wires that link to them are tight and solid connections, plus check to see if you have any rust etc on the alternator connections and starter.
Key here is wether or not the previous owner kept the car up to par and so far it sounds like just basic repairs have been made so far by your mechanics.No1 issue is on a ten year or older vehicle a lot of the electrical system failers are related to bad connections especially bad engine grounds or battery or alternator or starter connections , plus most people dont actually ever have the electrical ever over hauled.
If I were you I’d be making sure the rest of the vehicle is solid mechanically and having a few shops do a free brake and front end and suspension check. I’d also have a few engine shop mechanics offer their opinion on the engine, plus I might also have the engine’s clynders pressures checked.
The front brakes shouldn’t be that expensive to replace but it also helps to make sure to truly shop around before deciding on and repairs.Basically it really shouldn’t take any shop any longer then 90 to 120 mins tops to replace the front brakes. If you’re going to invest in brakes why not be sure to have life long replacement pads used bec they don’t really cost that much more really.
Example average basic pads are from 18 to 30.00 bucks and add lifetime warranty its only on avergage about 50 to 60.00 in total but of course they can run from 60 to 120 a pair or more if specialty or custom parts.Myself I don’t recommend the top grade of pads bec most of the time they wear the rotors out much faster and really they don’t offer much of an extra stopping time advantage for the extra cost at all.I’d use med grade or quality parts and use the lifetime warrnty pads if I knew I planned on keeping the vehicle for awhile and all.
Best thing is truly knowing your vehicle and making sure if you’re ever to sell it that you in fact know the car well bec that makes a better selling advantage point usaully for any seller. Also check the prices of those types of cars and then decide on best to sell it now or is it worth it to fix and drive it some more. One thing is if selling certified that really helps but remember once certified the certificate is only usually valid for 31 days or at least here in Canada its 31 days.So really it’s best to first do your homework and have car checked out fully , plus try to line up a shop that will stick to their price quote on certifaction work but have work done once you a solid buyer lined up and backup interested parties.

Hope that helps, best of luck and nice car by the way.You might want to check with the local car clubs or online clubs too bec there is a lot of people that own and know those cars and can offer you very helpful advice.

Powered by Yahoo! class="dtm-content">
Head Gasket Replacement

Alright, so my car starting yesterday gave off this weird smell and the meter that tells you hot the engine shot from quarter mark to the half mark. As soon as I got on the highway the engine cooled back down until I got off the highway where it shot abck to the halfway mark. I left my car for about 5 hours. I went back to drive it and this time the meter stayed at the quarter mark but the same smell came. This smell both times only lasted for about 2 minutes. Now I drove my car about 3 miles to the car shop and back from the car shop. Both times no smell and no overheating. The guys at the car shop told me that they think my head gasket was blown and needed to be replaced which is a 900 dollar cost! They are going to do a test on it tomorrow to make sure. I just wanted to know if anyone had any input to what was going on and if they were just overexaggerating the problem. Thanks

You’d get a lot better answers, and a lot more of them, if we knew what kind of vehicle it was. Cylinder head gaskets are pretty common on some. But checking the Thermostat operation would be the first thing to do on pretty much any cooling system diagnosis. Since they haven’t had a chance to properly diagnose it yet, they probably gave a worst case scenario because they’re tired of being pressured. People who don’t know anything about cars always seem to think we have a crystal ball or something.

I have driven Subarus for years and have three now. My 1992 stick shift is still my favorite going on 300K. You have a stick shift and it still has at least another 100K miles to go. Get the additive for sealing the gasket and try that. These years did have the head gasket problem and often the sealant takes care of it. It’s probably not blown out – just leaking out. That’s a cheap fix and the first thing worth doing. If you do need a new gasket, “a few thousand dollars” is way out of line. Anyone who has replaced head gaskets can do it for less than $1,000.

As a rule of thumb, multiply 5 cents times a reasonable estimate of how many more miles this car will go. For you that is .05 X 100,000 = $5,000. That is how much you can spend on unexpected problems like this and be very sure it was worth doing.

…and get another mechanic. This one did not suggest the sealant, gave you a bad fix quote and does not have a clue about what is worth fixing.

First of all, under what conditions are you facing the miss-firing? Running cold, hot, uphill, downhill, in reverse, at a certain speed or whilst cornering even? Allow me to explain please. The head gasket keeps the radiator heating/cooling fluid separate from the cylinder and the oil and all the rest of where it’s not supposed to go. Plus, when the engine is put together, you have to have something to keep the two halves of the engine from rubbing together and wearing out! (Actually, there are about six pieces to the whole engine housing not counting the oil pan) Replacing the head gasket would not only involve that gasket itself, but also the valve cover gasket as well as the timing belt housing gaskets, the belts themselves(the belts are NOT to be re-used after removal!), etc., etc. And so on. Get a new mechanic who knows what he/she is doing please! Every time your current mechanic is re-setting the engine trouble light, he’s masking the problem! The car’s electronic control module(e.c.m.) needs to be able to gather ALL the information it can in order to better tell the mechanic what is and isn’t wrong with the car. By the way, it sounds as if you are having a ignition module or alternator problem to me. Check the ignition modual(s) first though, as you don’t have to take them out of the car to test them!

I’ve a 1995 honda civic with 166000 miles on it. Should I replace the blown head gasket or replace the engine?

I really need help with this. My car has always been working fine but recently it had problems when I started it. The engine would shake and when driving at low speeds, the engine would shake noticeably. I took it to a repair shop and the guy said I blew my head gasket. I could either replace it with a new head gasket, but that would still leave the rest of the engine as “old”. He recommended I replace the engine entirely, which I was shocked would cost $2500-$3000. I do plan on keeping this car for awhile as it’s very dependable. I need to know if I should pay, I assume the $500 for a head gasket replacement or to pony up the $2500 for a replacement engine. Any advice is greatly appreciated asap, thanks.
Hey,thnks for the responses. My Honda has never had any major problems before+ I love the car. It’s very reliable+ great gas mileage. The mechanic was really pushing me to get a new engine; his shop uses factory parts +seems to know wht they’re doing. I said i wanna shop around, he said of course I’d find a better deal elsewhere but that he’ll replace not just certain parts or whatnot, but all parts that need to be fixed. He mentioned a timing belt for $700, which seems very high, he then said he’s not just fixing the timing belt but everything else around the timing belt. He did say something like if I got a new engine, it’d be used with 60k miles on it. If I replace the headgasket, the rest of the engine will still have 166k miles on it, so is it better to just replace the engine with a rebuilt one so everything is new?I do intend on keeping the car for awhile. I want a good deal+ feel that 2500 is a lot, but wonder if it’s worth it for a fully functioning car that’ll last more years
I talked to the mechanic and it’ll be $2000 for a replacement engine with around 60k miles on it, but it comes with timing belt, tensioner, cam seal, crank seals, water pump, thermostat, gasket, oil pan gasket, power steering belt, altern belt, spark plugs, valve cover gasket, tube seals, intake gasket, exhaust gasket, oil filter, coolant, spoart plugs. If I just fixed the head and the head gasket, and got a new timing belt, thermostat, and water pump, it would cost $1200…..so for just $800 more I could get a “new” engine which seems like a great deal as opposed to just fixing the top half of the engine, still having the bottom half at 166k miles, correct? This place is well known and respected around here too.
I called another mechanic and he’s only charging $630 to replace the head, head gasket, timing belt, thermostat, water pump. I wonder if I should just do that and then do the “new” engine replacement when I reach 250k miles or so. Any ideas?
I called again and the $630 doesn’t include stuff like power steering belt, alternator belt, spark plugs….I don’t even know if they are needed but he said it wouldn’t be a large additional cost for everything. The new mechanic is would also do for $1500 a “used japanese engine” with under 100k miles on it with a 6 month 0r 6k warranty on parts and labor………….so in this new scenario I can pay around $900 more for a “new used engine” as opposed to just fixing the head gasket, timing belt, thermostat and water pump. I did drive around for 5 days after I blew the head gasket and the guy said I probably have messed up other parts of the engine or whatnot (he would have to check)…….so would this mean that a new engine is the definite choice?
I took my car to the mechanic my friend recommended and I felt really comfortable with him. The total is now at around $1700. He’ll replace the engine with a used engine with under 100k miles on it, timing belt, water pump, thrmstat, radiator hoses, all seals + gaskets, fan belt, all with 6k mi waranty. He mentioned other deals advertising used engines with 30k-60k miles on it are misleading, especially considering it’s a 95 civic, not a more recent car. I have no idea how cars work and I ended up doing the used engine because if I just fixed the head gasket, a few thousand miles down the road, I didn’t wanna find out I have to replace the actual head or block itself…..not sure how often that happens though. Thinking back, at 166k miles, I could have maybe just replaced the head gasket, but I guess I was worried there was other stuff wrong with the engine, considering I drove the car around for 5 days with the blown head gasket. I did end up seeing white smoke oozing when I took it in

Just replace the head gasket and have the head milled and make sure u get an new timing belt installed too, have the mechanic check the water pump to make sure it is still good Also i highly recommend taking the car to an mechanic who specializes in foreign cars they do better work but it will cost a little bit more

causes of head gasket failure and repair cost?

Hi, recently my car started overheating and I found that the coolant was mixed with oil (I submitted a question about this earlier, but that is a bit different question). I took it to the garage and they told me the head gasket needs to be replaced and there could be other parts that need replacement after the full diagnosis. now I just have to believe what they say, because I can’t prove them wrong if they lie about some part damaged even if it isn’t (the garage is part of good garrage scheme, but not sure if that certificate is enough to trust them). it is a 2003 Ford Focus diesel car (5dr hatchback) and the mileage is 71300. the garage mechanic says the whole repair cost would be somewhere between £700 to £1200 depending on the damage (he says the head gasket alone could cost £700 to fix including labour). now here are my questions.

1. how much the head gasket would cost to fix (assuming £50 per hour for labour which is what the garage charges at the moment)
2. what other parts could go wrong when the coolant is mixed with oil and how much will it cost to replace them
3. what are the reason for the failure of head gasket, will it happen if I drive for long distance without taking breaks in between? or is it normal for this to fail in old cars?

Overheating will cause head gasket failure and possibly the head to warp.It is around £500 to replace a head gasket and maybe an extra £200 if it needs skimming (all including labour). I would go a few garages and get quotes do NOT use a main dealer unless they are willing to match an independent garages price.

The oil and coolant mixing will not have any effects on anything else and as soon as everything is fixed and refilled the car should be fine.

You could drive a car non stop for days and not suffer any problems, as I said overheating could have caused it as things don’t like getting hot and if driven for too long you will get problems. BUT head gaskets can just go for no reason as well and it doesn’t matter on the age of the car.

Powered by Yahoo! Answers

Here are a few tricks that can help on some cars:

Raise the tire pressure. Run as high a pressure as you can live with up to the maximum pressure on the sidewalls. This may cause the center of the tread to wear faster but will reduce the rolling resistance of the tire.

Remove any external accessories like a roof rack or extra antenna or anything that will disrupt the air flow.

Use conveyor belt material to make a cover for underneath the car to smooth out the air flow.

Experiment with using a wider gap on the spark plugs. Also if your car has platinum plugs try using plugs with steel electrodes set at 10 to 20 thousandths wider than is called for int he factory manual. You will have to change the plugs about once a year as they will wear faster but in some cases fuel economy in increased.

Some people have seen an increasing fuel economy by adding acetone to the fuel. Others report no change form this trick.

For more tips see my article on Jeep MPG. class="dtm-content">I completely agree with “defiant…” about the Ninja 250.

The only adversity I can see with your owning a Ninja 250 would be your size. The little Ninja 250 is a small bike.

You may want to go check one out at a dealer and see how you fit on it before buying one.

If you find that it is just too small (and my 15 year old son is finding his is starting to get too small), then you might want to consider a 500cc or 600cc bike instead.

After you take the MSF class (you are taking it I presume), you should be able to handle the 500cc or 600cc bike.

The bigger bikes will cost more than the Ninja 250, but used ones shouldn’t be out of range.

I park lots of places cars can’t get. Those little triangular spots right across from the front doors at Walmart — nice.

At work there are these spaces at the end of each parking row which are perfect for a motorcycle. And they are right near the door.

Parking with a bike can often be a pleasure indeed. Plus the fact that you can still get them into the garage even when the kids have piled all kinds of crap in there.

<div

I usually catch fish from 1-20 lb’s in large amounts. Best pole I have seen so far to put up with extreme test is Ugly stick unfortunately at the moment it is using a spin caster reel which i love. I run into problems though on the bell housing the plastic neck that is to the side of the brass string bearing guide seems to wear from the string cutting into it over time. Is there a fix for that or tips on it also. But the solid ugly stick pole is for bait caster reels that I am using… Should I Just find a pole repair kit and break that first loop off and put a larger one on? I think the smaller hole guide is contributing to line memory. I use a high quality line to avoid this already called Vanish. But up for any tips there also. Any fishing line recommendations? Fire line vs Spider wire vs Braided plastic line‘s what win’s? Thanks this is a big packed question but please give best answers. (Note: Any trade marked products i refer to here i only mention to remedy my issue. And do not wish to benifit from use of there names etc. And all rights reserved or whatever).
Zebco style seems to be majority here. I worked on a fish farm for 2 years with those style reels. Never hit me till now that they were the best after every one here’s almost unanimous answer It hit me that those style reel’s do in fact avoid line memory. Plus i do like that the string is enclosed that would help provide protection to the string from being damaged. And being enclosed avoid being cooked and brittle. As a General rule of thumb change your fishing line: Once a year. I love the way the push button works on those style too. Grown on Spin caster reels though, but i think i might change that today to the zebco. As for the Plastic neck wearing from line cutting into it. The best answer is using a compound called JB Weld. Like epoxy the 2 compounds added u can paste it onto the neck repairing the worn part so the line does not get pinched on the side of the line bearing guide part. I have detached the arms bought a glasses repair kit with longer screws yet the hole that the screw goes through to hold the arm on to the frame seems to be spring loaded .It does not matter what I do I cannot get the holes to line up so I can get he new screw through it and do them up.I can’t even put the arm back on that I took off for the same reason. Does anyone know of any tricks that allow you too keep the spring-loaded bit out so the holes all line up and the screw can be screwed in .I have tried trapping pieces of wire in the gap but none of them seem to want to stay in place .The glasses were a present from my wife so I would like to fix them rather than get a new pair which would of course be easier. Recently, my car started shaking whenever I was stopped and the car was still in drive. It doesn’t shake as much when I put it into neutral or park. It also doesn’t shake at all when I go above 5 MPH. It feels like the vibrations are coming from directly underneath my seat and not the engine itself (although I can’t be 100% sure). The basic answer that my glass guy, mechanic and the dealership confirmed was that once this happens, you have to replace the windshield. class="dtm-content">If the pipes are properly designed, and the fuel system is properly tuned to match the new pipes, you may get an increase in power, along with a decrease in fuel mileage.
If the pipes are haphazardly designed, or the proper fuel adjustments are not made, you will get BOTH worse performance and worse gas mileage.

There isn’t any “magical” device out there to reduce fuel consumption. class="dtm-content">No, not wider gaps necessarily , they are just there for high energy systems versus the older points-based system, which had lower voltage coils and couldn’t jump the bigger gap.

If you get a MSD unit ( Multiple Spark discharge ), you can have your plugs fire 2-3 times each stroke, which will help reduce mis-fires, and WILL improve gas mileage a little bit. They can be costly, and might require computer chip reprogramming in your car/truck, but it is one of the few spark changers which WILL help a little.

Another change is positioning the spark plug so that the finger which extends over the center electrode is not blocking the intake valve discharge. I don’t know how it is possible to line them all up, depending on the threads, but hot rodders have marked them and then shimmed them so that the rear of the side finger won’t block the air and gas flow from the intake valve, which gives it a clear shot at the spark. A VERY picky point, but I suppose it could affect gas mileage on a few cylinders that way. And so minor, but when you need 1-2 extra HP out of a 1,000 HP mega-motor, I guess any small advantage is STILL an advantage.

- The Gremlin Guy -

There is a misconception that the catalytic converter hurts MPG and performance. While this is true to a small degree, it is not like it used to be. By using a high flow cat, you might pick up two miles per gallon. But do not remove this or gut it as the ECM has to have one there to keep the car from going into limp home mode or shutting the car down completely.
Exhaust manifolds can create an unneeded amount of back pressure, so tubular headers will also give better performance.
Now the above two items are not that cheap to replace, to improve a car in these two areas can cost from 200 dollars on up.
Some spark plugs do increase MPG’s and performance, according to dyno results done by Grassroots Motorsports there can be a marked improvement.
Also the grade of oil can produce noticeable results, switching to a 10W-? From a 30W-? Would help. If the car is built to be able to use 5W-? The results will be even better.
Don’t labor under the misconception that if horse power is increased that the MPG’s will suffer! The thing is that most of us will drive to take advantage of power and not to increase MPG’s. So along with modifications and changing the air filter as well as running about 3 lbs more air pressure- drive smarter. Instead of powering into a turn and braking at the last minute, lift the throttle sooner and let the car slow down by itself. The cheapest modification to make to improve fuel economy is to change ones driving habits!

Powered by Yahoo! Answers
Tags: The fluid in the 722.6 series transmission, according to Benz, is good for the life of the vehicle so there is no need to change it. It doesn’t hurt to change it but, again, according to the manufacturer, it is not necessary. If you do decide to change it, the filter and gasket are actually quite reasonable. The expensive part of the job is the replacement transmission fluid.

It’s up to you whether you want a dealer or another shop to do the work. In my opinion, if you go to Benz, you do get piece of mind that a dealer (and the MB organization as a whole) is behind the work. If you take it elsewhere, you may wonder if the person working on the car has the experience of working on other Benz models and if the work is being carried out properly. Is that piece of mind worth the extra money?
BTW, the dealers will not double the price of the tires. In my experience, the cost of the tires is competitive with their local competitors. What will be more expensive is the labour to put them on. What you will find at the dealer is they they will usually stick with the tires approved by Mercedes Benz for your vehicle. Other shops will stick on whatever you ask for so yes, if you put on a no-name tire, it will be much less expensive compared to a Michelin MXV4 Primacy or Continental Pro Contact (a couple of tires that are on the approval list for your vehicle).

The dealer charged me $127.00 for replacing Cabin Filter. The break down of this is $29.73 for parts and $98.00 for labor. I felt very bad about it. Can he charge like that? How much time it takes to replace a filter and what hourly charges he can bill me? Is there no limit on this?
He charged me $9.16 for brake fluid and $98.00 for service. He charged me $35.54 for oil change.
Yeah, seems like that dealer is tryin to wring the max $ outa u, and that’s ugly, and ur rite to be sceptical & angry, and I hope u complain and get some money back, BUT the Dealer is likely the only one w/ the proprietary diagnostic software, experience, special tools, & parts avail; and that’s part of wat ur payin for.

I’ve fought tooth n nail vs. Brand-name dealers like Honda where I finally got $8,200 back on a botched bodywork & paint insurance job on an Accord.

But from having independent shops mess up my vehicle, too, I’ve learned the hard way Dealers are the best of the worst for maintenance.

Do not go to any independents, P. Boys & F.Stone included. U wont save that much on the jobs despite their con job to the contrary, and u mite pay hugely if they mess up something big and the Dealer denies warranty coverage, blaming them

Some Dealers will use any excuse to get outa having to pay, and blaming an expensive prob on an independent’s work is a perfect out.

And I’d read ur extended warranty very carefully, seeing wats covered, excluded, wat the limits and definitions are. Hopefully it’s a bumper to bumper Factory warranty, not third party, and not power train. If it’s not those things, try to change it.

Since ur in the mood, also read ur State laws on Warranties, Consumer law, Small Claims, etc. I’ve never lost @ Small Claims & made good $.

As u discovered, ur ina war, buyer vs seller. class="dtm-content">That’s a good deal on it, i paid around 3500 for the one i got and its a 96 with about 100 k on it from an individual owner, but i knew the person real good, had it not been for me knowing them i would have had to pay a lot more for the truck,id offer them 5 for it and i think you,ll get it at that price, the 5th wheel alone is worth an extra grand on it,check it out good though before you buy it because they was know to crack the block on the lower side if they was used for doing heavy work, good luck.

Powered by Yahoo! class="dtm-content">There really is no such thing as a ‘tune-up’ these days. A tune-up was required on older vehicles when engines had distributors (and points and condensers within the distributor), carburetors, timing that needed to be checked and reset, etc.
These days, those components no longer exist and it’s all computer adjusted and controlled. When you hear of the term tune-up today, it basically just means change the spark plugs and check the fluid levels and filters.

As for your vehicle, there is no such thing as a 2001 ML350. In ’01, the only V6 ML was the ML320. The ML350 made its debut halfway through the 2003 model year.

You asked for an example. 1998 Mercedes 400 series had a bad engine fan, called dealership for replacement fan. My cost was $1,212.91 just for the fan assembly not counting any mark up or installation. Lexus fan assembly for a 400 series vehicle is about $400.00 my cost. There is your example you decide. If your rich and money does not matter, get what you want.
Oh, that oil change will also be a bit more expensive being as they only use synthetic and it takes 8 1/2 quarts plus a filter for about $125.00 per oil change.

<div
