So — they tell us the timing belt has slipped and quoted us $1300 to fix it. Then ASKED TO BUY IT FROM US when my husband was hesitant to give them the go ahead to do repairs. Fast forward after husband calls various garages to get ballpark quotes. We take it to a Honda Dealership and after giving it a thorough diagnostics/look over, they call my husband confused and say “What did they tell u was wrong? The timing belt is fine on this car. It just needs a new battery.”
So after 2 tows, a car rental for the wk, and diagnostics, we are out almost $500 for a bad battery. I know we wont get our money back, but is there anything we can do to make this garage regret having been so dishonest and unprofessional? Dh has called twice and they wont let him speak with the owner, he just gets the service mgr who says “I’m really sorry”.

Have you paid them ?

You might consider not paying them and letting them put a lien on your car … Which would put you in the spot of not being able to sell the car, but since it is a 95 and it sounds like you’re gonna drive it til it dies …

If you paid them or didn’t – You could also try to sue them in small claims court for defrauding you … That might at least let you get in a position to negotiate some of the money you paid them.

Did you get the estimate in writing from the first shop? Did you pay them anything for the improper diagnosis? If they did not charge you for the diagnosis, you have no real recourse because you have no loss (other than the second tow job, which they are not responsible for) If you paid them to check out the car, you should be able to get a refund of that money!

If f they refuse a full refund, take them to small claims court. Be sure you have the receipts from the Honda dealer and the incompetent shop to show that they diagnosed the problem incorrectly!

Buying Car with Odometer problem?

I’m looking at this ’95 honda accord from a dealer, went w/ my uncle who’s more experienced in buying a car than me. We did the usual body check, popped the hood and checked the engine, incl. timing belt, oil checks, and no leaks. We did a test drive, city and highway, which was smooth. it’s got pretty high mileage, about 230k km, mostly hiway kms. but was assured that it was regularly serviced at the dealership. I’m inclined to buying it, as it looks and drives like mint cond. Told them to let me sleep on it and i got home.

I got home, pulled a CarFax on it. Truth be told it was regularly serviced @ Dealership. But, was flagged with Inconsistent Odometer Reading, could be rollback or clerical error. Jan 7/04 185,510km, Jan 16/04 it was 196k km, but Nov 15/04 it was 185400 km. Sold @ auction 3 times may & jun ’05, feb ’06. mar ’06 odometer was 204k km. mar ’07 it was reported 120k km.

Two Odometer Inconsistencies, screw up or not? & sold 3 times in auction, what do you guys think?
oh yeah, i forgot, i also went to AutoCheck, but AutoCheck doesn’t see any problems to it, unlike w/ CarFax. Also, according to AutoCheck, it’s only been to Auction twice. lol now i’m confused who to believe >.<

Please, I need mechanic help with my 98 VW Passat?

So we bought a 98 Passat a few weeks ago (march 14th is the actual purchase date) When my husband brought it home from the dealership (we bought it out cash) he didnt notice anything wrong with the car. Not until he took the car to get an oil change is that he noticed that the car was leaking coolant. So we took it to VW to get an Diagnosis on what was wrong with the car. So they told us that it had a hoe that was leaking coolant. So to repair that hose it would be around $220 for the part and the labor.
Since the evaluated the whole car, on thei evaluation sheet they marked that the 1. Shock absorbers/suspension/struts, 2. Steering gear box/linkage and boots/ball joints/dust covers, 3. engine oil/fluid leak, 4. drive shaft boots/constant velocity boots/u joints/transmission linkage (if equipped) where all in the red meaning they all need immediate attention. This was all under the “under vehicle” of the inspection report they did on the car.

Ok then on the comments/estimates they added:

Upper links $1027.13
Camshaft Adj Leaking $457
R/Outer CV Boot Torn $250
Reccomend T-Belt $590

I am a lil skeptical and I find it hard to believe that a car with only 104k miles would need all of this. It is a 5-speed manual so I dont know if that makes a difference at all. Part of me just wants to say I told you so and nag him on making the quick purchase and not getting a civic or an accord (i have a lot of faith in honda) but what ever its too late now. I also want to make sure that the dealership servicing is not trying to rip us off. My husband found some receipts in the glove compartment and found that a new timing belt had been put in in the summer of 06′ so we could get that off the list. But that still leaves us with a total of $1734.13 in reoairs which is almost half of what we bought the car for grrrrrr…..

My husband has a mechanic friend who can do the work for him but my husband says he would rather have vw do the work that way he has warranty if anything were to happen with those specific parts.

So what I am wondering is is all this stuff necessary or are they just trying to scam us. I would hate to think so, but you never know.
teh car was purchased as is from a small dealership. the car was always serviced at vw since theprevious owner had a lifetime of free oilchanges with the car. I am wondering if she too the car in to vw and they gave her the list of things that needed to be done so they decided it would be better to sell the car.

My first question is what sort of inspection or warranty did you get from the place that you purchased the car from. Was it a VW dealership? Was a smog and safety inspection performed on the vehicle? Is the dealership where the hose was replaced the same place where the vehicle was purchased? Inspections should always be performed before a car is purchased, but as you say, that’s water under the bridge. Was the car sold as is where is? Perhaps contacting the department of consumer affairs or the Better Business Bureau might help… All they can say is no…

I have not seen the car, so I cannot verify that the vehicle needs all of this, what I can tell you is that given the milage on the vehicle it is possible that some of this work needs to be done.

I would have the vehicle inspected by another VW specialist; it does not have to be a VW dealership, but someone who works on VW’s nearly all the time. If he/she is able to verify some or all of these items need service, you should be able to get this done for less money than the dealership charges.

The CV boot can be replaced by a completely rebuilt or exchange axle shaft for the same price or less, An aftermarket axle shaft can be purchased for $125 or less in most cases, plus anywhere from .5 hr to 1.0 at the most for labour to replace it. This will give you two new cv boots and rebuilt or new CV joints, rather than one boot (also there is the possiblity you might need a joint when they remove the old boot and inspect the joint). As far as the upper links on the suspension go, yeah, that’s possible depending upon the type of driving and where its been driven given the miles on the vehicle. However, its something that a good mechanic or front end shop can do for you for less money. They’ll also align the 4 wheels for you to reduce tyre wear after replacing the links.

I’m not no sure about the camshaft adjuster, but again, I’m not there to inspect the vehicle and say.

IF it’s any comfort, at least your Passat is a very safe car and a good car to be in (heaven forbid) an accident, as your chances of survival without serious injury are excellent.

Anyway, I hope this helps, a car nut.

Honda Accord 1996, new water pump/timing belt/oil change, smoke coming out from under the car and heats up?

I just had my water pump/timing belt replaced and oil change. When the pump failed, white smoke was coming out, which I figured out to be coolant from the smell. Now there is smoke coming out from under the engine, which I believe to smell like oil. Also, the temperature gauge goes up to the halfway point when I am at a stoplight or idling. The highest I have ever seen it is at 1/3.

I had my car serviced by the dealership and I asked them. The man said its burning oil residue from the oil change and that it will burn away in a few days. Is this true? I have had my car worked on and oil changed for the past year at this dealership and have never had any smoke or other problems. What else could be going on? Worse case scenarios. Thanks everyone.

<div

Every morning I can start it up just fine, yet if I were to park it, go into the store for a few minutes and then come out to start it again, it simply wont start. After work, when its been sitting there for a few hours, it starts up just fine. Yet for some mysterious reason, I can never stop it and start it in a recent amount of time. When it doesn’t start, it sounds and acts like a car would when the battery is dying.

I took it to my mechanic, he couldn’t figure it out, even after putting in a new fuel gage. The other boys at Napa and O’Reillys auto care cant figure it out either. I have taken it to many different places and yet am having no resolution. I have even seen this problem for others with the same car, same year and model. I am literally now leaving my car running when I go to the stores, leaving it running for upto 20 minutes at a time. I seriously dont know each day whether or not my car will be stolen, its an awfully uneasy feeling to constantly walk out of the store and wonder whether or not my car will still be there.

Can anybody help? Thank you! : )

Sounds like one of two problems, both dealing with the starter. The starter solenoid will not work as well in hot conditions. If you have the 3.1 liter in that thing, that solenoid sits pretty close to an exhaust manifold. A heat shield could resolve that issue. At the same time the brushes could be the issue. Perhaps they are just worn out and you are due for a starter rebuild if not a new one entirely. They are not expensive nor are they hard to do.

<div

We tried to raise the control arm up high enough to slide the wheel assembly hole into it, but when we get close the CV joint for the 4×4 gets in the way.

My dad and i have thought about taking that CV join out to give us more room but that may not work and its a hassle just to do it. Also, we CAN’T afford to have it taken in and have a mechanic do it. And we rather do it ourselves, but we have asked for help from NAPA, Advanced Auto and O’Reily’s and none of them have had it done before or done it before on any vehicle.

I’ve asked this once before but that was no help so I’m asking again for help. Its not difficult for someone to do, but its difficult if you’ve never done it before. Long as you can get it in right nothing can go wrong. The freakin truck has 217,000, and the engine hasn’t been rebuilt neither has the transmission. And it needs to last me at least 2 more years or atleast til i can find my own vehicle.

Just need help/advice on what to do. Taking it into a mechanic is not an option. We do have family members that could help but they are out of state right now on road construction.

Usually, when changing ball joints, you would need to take the whole spindle off, the CV axle can pe pulled up out of the way without removing it from the front differential. But it must be removed from the hub. Take the caliper off, with the bracket, and hang it from the upper control arm, or something high with a piece of wire or something, but don’t let it just hang. Then the rotor, and make sure you unplug the wheel speed sensor and remove it with the spindle. You will also need to unbolt the little bracket that holds the brake hose to the knuckle. You’re right, it’s not hard to do, just awkward to handle everything. You will have to point the ball joint stud towards the vehicle, or away from you, then insert it into the spindle, while putting the CV axle through the middle at the same time. Like I said, awkward, but not too difficult.

Powered by Yahoo! Answers
Tags: It is likely better to just buy a new one. Premier is known for making VERY cheap digital cameras for the major company’s ‘Economy’ lines.
These are the digital cameras that manufacturers sell for less than $175 and are cheaper and easier for the company’s to buy from third-party manufactuers instead of spending the resources to produce themselves.
Fuji’s A345 / A350 are both Premier made. Both cost less than $150. Both are too expensive to repair because the cost of parts is ridiculous. A lens alone is $100+, Main board is the same.
About the best thing you can do for your car is normal routine maintenance, keeping the fuel system clean, by using a good grade of fuel, I use chevron super unleaded, it has techron in it, this helps keeps my fuel system clean, along with clean oil and air filter, keeping the tire pressure correct, and lifting early off the gas pedal when cresting a hill, these are all real things that work. None of that crap in a can or any bolt on this or that is worth spit. Cheap crappy fuel can have contaminants in it, as well as water, this can help plug up a fuel system by leaving hard deposits in small orifices of fuel injection systems. Its best to keep the system clean from the beginning, than go back later and try to clean it out. And some of those el cheapo gas stations, sell some really poor quality fuel. About the best way to get good mpg, is to buy a newer more efficient car. Other than that, I have had to make significant changes in my driving habits of old, I used to love filling up and taking off on a nice long drive, I could drive pretty much all day for about 40 bucks. Not anymore, that same trip would be over a hundred and 10 dollars now. The problem is not us, or our driving habits, its those greedy thieving sorry excuse making a holes who steal from the poor and give to the rich oil bastards. Fine so I drive less and talk about those thieves on the internet.

Definitely take it to a trusted mechanic and let them know you plan to drive this distance. Ask them to do anything they have to do to make it ready. You will be going up and down some big hills.

Definately get the AAA. Don’t forget to mention at all hotels that you have AAA – that will often get you a discount. Good that you have the oil changed.

Get a spare tire. Bring some tools. Have some cash or plastic on hand. Bring snacks, blankets and clothes.

Hope you have cruise control!

It sounds as if you ‘ve set a realistic timetable for yourself. Motel 6 is usually a pretty good place, in my experience. Of course, I like them because they let dogs in the rooms.
Just be sure that your car’s tires have good tread on them. And, it wouldn’t hurt to check the air pressure when you get closer to the Rocky Mountains. If you don’t have one already, get a gas can to put in the trunk. And bring a cell phone. I don’t know what kind of vehicle you’re driving, but you may find that your gas mileage may improve a little bit at higher and less humid elevations. I experienced that once driving across Nevada. Oh, and inspect the radiator hoses and drive belts thoroughly, replacing anything that doesn’t look right.
All I can suggest regarding the tornado possibilities is to find a weather station to listen to on the radio.
Also, it would be a good idea to bring some gallon jugs of water along.
Good luck with the trip.

<div

It currently has 31,800 miles, runs great, no mechanical problems at all. There are no rips, tears, stains or marks of any kind in or on the car, has never been involved in an accident. The car has red leather interior and red brake calipers. It is a great 2005 Roush Mustang GT with a roush body kit and 20″ black chrome rims. It also has an aftermarket grill, a couple hundred dollars worth of underglow and the shaker 1000 sound system. The underglow has many different options including several different colors, and paterns of movement. The clear title is available and it will be shipped with the car. You will receive the title, registration and bill of sale.
I recently was promoted and had to move to the UK. I’m in London and the car is located in Columbia, SC. It’s already prepared for shipping and the shipping taxes are included in this price.
To secure this sale, we will use ebay to finalize our deal because it protects both buyer and seller and they keep the money until you get the car. You have 7 days to inspect the car and I receive the money after you make sure everything is ok and decide to keep it. If you don’t like the car and want to return it, I will arrange to ship it back and you will be 100% refunded by ebay. I’m sure you will love the car and don’t want to return it but it’s good to know that you have this option available.<br

I sprayed the studs with WD40 when I put the wheels back on, and torqued them down to spec. A week and a half later, I happened upon a sale on tires and decided to get the tires on the truck replaced. When I went to pick it up, the tire shop told me that they had to spend 15 minutes on each wheel cleaning the WD40 off the studs. The tire shop manager told me that lubes like WD40 cause the nuts to become overtorqued, and that the best thing to do is just to clean up the threads with a wire brush, and at the most, use dry graphite.

Has anybody ever heard this one? I have used WD40 for years, and I have never had a problem with getting the lug nuts off, or damaging studs or wheels from overtorqueing them.

The tire shop is right, to a certain extent. Use of WD40 will throw the torque setting off when tightening. It even says so on most car manuals. You haven’t had problems getting the lug nuts off or having the lug nuts become damaged because Ford has high torque specs for its trucks and large cars – usually over 100 ft-lb. Using WD-40 is more troublesome for import cars (European and Asian) whose torque specs are 60 to 70 ft-lbs. Having each lug nuts torqued at the same torque setting is just as important as having them torqued at the proper spec. This is because the lug nuts should be torqued evenly so that the rotor doesn’t vibrate or move vertically while braking. By doing so, you minimize rotor warping and scoring. So clean the threads with a wire brush next time.

Powered by Yahoo! Answers
Tags: Plan a budget and then double basically everything you think you will spend. Living on your own is way more expensive they you can imagine. Rent is only a small part of the cost of moving out – it is everything else that really adds up!

If possible, before moving out on your own see if you can move in with a family member first and pay them rent, buy your own supplies, etc. It is a great test run without being locked into a lease. If you can manage stay a home as long as you possibly can. I know it sucks but it is so hard to move out at 18, especially if you are still in school.

You can adjust the fuel mixture screw on it but it should be tuned for the best stochiometric ratio of fuel:air. If you lean it a bit then the engine will run hotter which is bad and can cause engine wear. The oil and spark plugs recommended for your vehicle are for use at the correct stochiometric ratio of fuel:air. You may save fuel but in the long run you may damage your engine.

NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Rubbing alcohol is 75% water. You DO NOT want that in your fuel system. It will cause corrision in your tank, clog up your filter and could do damage to your injectors and sensors.

I’ve heard of people putting denatured alcohol in their tanks up north – but I think it’s a risk unless you have a car that is E85 certified.

<div

But I always seem to get more miles out of my tank when I make extended trips traveling an average of 80 mph.

Also I don’t drive 65 mph on the freeway if I can help it. class="dtm-content">Traveling at a speed of 55 MPH rather than 65 MPH should save on gas because wind resistance increases exponentially with speed. Twice the speed produces sixteen times the wind resistance the engine must overcome. Any reduction in speed should save gas although the effect is minimal at very low speeds. Also, manufacturers have to design an engine and transmission to perform optimally at some arbirtrary speed and 55 MPH is somewhere between city and country driving speeds and is a logical trade off. You may get better milage on any long trip compared to the stop and go of city driving that includes idling, acceleration and braking. Braking is the easiest way to discard energy that has been used to move the car. Of course, stopping to receive a speeding ticket is one sure way to reduce both MPH and MPG . Good luck.

There is no such product. Think of the concepts involved. In order to significantly alter fuel mileage in a car this “product” would have to add power to the engine allowing you to decrease throttle. For the product to do this it would have to have been previously “charged” with this power during its production. That energy would cost quite a bit and therefore the item wouldn’t be a common household product, also you are operating an internal combustion engine,so no matter what fuel you use you are very limited by this design. There is no free lunch in physics. Someone who tells you different is trying to sell you something, if you want to accelerate and propel a mass at a velocity it will always cost you energy

Powered by Yahoo!
