Do I need to rebuild or replace my transmission?
I have a 95 Chevy Lumina. It start jerking into gear a month or so ago, and then one day it just refused to go into 2nd gear or higher (it’s an automatic). Is the transmission shot completely? How much is it going to cost to fix this? Do I need to rebuild it, or find a replacement? If so, where is a good place to find a replacement?
To answer the questions below:
Yes, I had everything checked at Wal-mart, fluids, oil change, all of that. They said it was fine.
It’s a funny thing though – When it first started, the jerking (from 1st to 2nd only) was really bad, then I got a oil change, and it seemed to go away for a couple weeks. I left the country for about three months, the car sat unused, when I came back it started doing it again. I got another oil change thinking it might help, but it didn’t. I am assuming it’s the transmission but….maybe I am wrong here???
What else could it be???

I have a ford mondeo 2.0L automatic gearbox problem.?
I bought a 1998 ford mondeo 2litre automatic car. When I change gearshift to Drive postion or accelerate, there is vibration to my car. My car had a breakdown on roadside. when I put gearshift on Drive, first or second gear, I cannot drive the car forward. I can just drive backward. The guy who’s from roadside rescue company to check the exhaust hose of gearbox. He told me that there is a smell which come from rub of metal and need to a replacement of gearbox. It will cost me much money to fix it. Do I really have to do that? Is there any malfunction of parts of transmission system to result in this problem? Thanks.

It sound slike the brake bands in the gearbox are worn or out of adjustment, could also be a lack of gear oil.. You need to have it checked by a auto box specialist.. Low on oil will give off a burnt smell and the oil will be discoloured,

Can you confirm what the guy at my local oil change place told me about getting transmission fluid replaced!!?
I drive a 2001 Buick Regal with about 125,000 miles on it. I took it in the other day and was due for a transmission fluid “flushing and replacement“, I believe that is what they do. Anyways, it costs around $90 and I was going to have it done. When I was in the waiting room one of the guys who worked there said that I should not get it replaced. He said after a while the fluid gets real thick and the car gets used to the thickness of the transmission fluid and adapts to it. If you change it, the fluid will be real thin and the car might act up. He also said I would need to sign something. He said I have problems with the transmission I should take it to a transmission shop. So I didn’t get it done. Was this a mistake? Does the guy know what he is talking about? Today I was driving and my transmission was acting up a little bit, kinda rough on switching gears (it is an automatic).
I think I got my transmission fluid replaced around 60 or 70 thousand miles and I guess they recommend it being changed every 50 thousand miles.

Many shops flush and fill, using a machine to suck out the fluid, but they don;t drop the pan. Any gunk left is loosened, and clogs the old filter or screen, the transmission dies. You go to a transmission shop and pay $100 to $125, for TOTAL transmission service, and they replace filter, flush transmission and torque converter, and install new fluid.
However, if your transmission is acting up, there may be other problems that need to be corrected before they do the fluid service.

How/Where can I find a used or new rear differintial and axle for 1996 chevy Z-71 truck?
I have a friend who has a 1996 chevrolet Z-71 truck. I’m pretty sure its a 5.3 liter V-8, extended cab, short bed, automatic transmission. The engine is new ( replaced). He wants to sale it, I would like to buy it for an extra vehicle. The problem is that the rear differential is shot/busted. He told me that it has had to be rebuilt several times over the years. He suspects that thier is some other reason that it continuously has to have rear diff replacements. He suggested “replacing everthing between the rear tires” guess that means axle, housing, mounts etc etc. I live in Midland Tx and need to locate the part or parts and price them. Used would be nice, or salvaged. New is an option too but I’de like to keep cost down since truck will be a hobby/toy and not primary vehicle. If I look on line I find parts that are several states away. The shipping will probably cost more than the parts. I have a SUV and flat bed trailer to go pickup parts if I locate a good deal. I’m just wondering if any of Y’all know of a good way to advertise my interest in buying parts? Maybe somebody knows a good website to search for parts? maybe somebody knows someone with this part or similar vehicle that could be bought for salvage? Thnx in advance!

If he’s had to get it rebuilt that much I assume he’s ran the hell out of it the whole time he’s had it, which also isn’t good for the engine or transmission. I’ve had my 98 Silverado Z71 since 04 and has only replaced the rear axle assembly once and that was because I would do burnouts, donuts and go mudding all the time. Since I stopped doing all that 5 years ago I haven’t had any problems. By the way it’s a 5.7 Liter 350 not a 5.3 in a 96 unless he did an engine swap to a 5.3 Liter.
The one axle I did get a long time ago I got out of a junkyard and it was inspected to make sure it was alright. If they don’t have one they can most likely find one for you. They ask for the G codes, it will be a bunch of codes on a label in the glovebox. It will be 2 codes that start with the letter G which is for the rear axle.

Help diagnosing rattle/vibration 1995 Ford Mustang?
I posted a question the other day about a rattle/vibration on a 6 cyl automatic 1995 Mustang which makes a rattle vibration when the car would be in gear (does not rattle/vibrate in neutral), and when moving up to about 20-30 mph. Lots of horror stories on the internet about Ford Torque converters. Today occurred to me that this vibration probably could not be U-Joints or bent drive shaft because in Neutral the drive shaft would not be spinning. Any experiences on fixing Ford torque converters without replacement of the torque converter? Cost of torque converter replacement would be more than the car could be sold for considering body damage from a rear end hit some years ago. Anyone have any opinions on transmission stop leak products for Fords….do they work?… do they damage transmission….

admin answers:
This is an easy one, if you have the car in drive, or reverse and it shakes just sitting in your driveway with the brake on, and when you put it in neutral or park, while still holding the brake down and it goes away, it is 100% motor and or tranny mounts, just replace them all and be done with it.
