No motorcycles do not need smog testing in California.

If you don’t have an MC license already, you’ll need to get one once you get here.

If you don’t have an MC license yet, I suggest taking an MSF (Motorcycle Safety Foundation) course. When you pass the course, you will not have to ride the performance exam at the DMV. Here is a link that provides info about getting your license in CA.

Engine swap Emission test In California ?

Ok im trying to do an engine swap on my firebird 97 firebird . V6 to a V8 lt1 but the engine is from a 94 Camaro but there the same model 93 to 98 GM it says the engine can be of the same year or [ Newer ] so I don’t get this emissions control in California are stupid. Does this mean I can not do the swap ?

People from Ca are preferred but other people can give me advice from other states.

admin answers:

The year model of your car determines the emission specs, not the year of the engine. The intent is to get the older engines off the road. So if you have a newer body, you can’t put in an older engine unless it meets or exceeds the emission standards for the year of your car.

Same issues we have in AZ.

91 eldorado cadillac v8 eldorado emission test California?

i took my car for the test. the engine light came on periodically but it doesn’t stay on. The first time i took it everything passed but the results said * fuel evaporatove control disconnected*? . Okay took the car to the mechanic all the plugs replaced. Took the car back today and now something else is showing on the test for it not to pass? Now the Asm results say at 25 mph the ( PPM) is 1184 so it failed? When we took the car the first time the PPM was only 220? What could have happened? The smog guy is only a test only so no repairs. he suggested maybe the car needed to run for a while. I am down the street from the smog center about 5 minuets. He asked me if my car was cold. The car was sitting at work since 6:30 am in the morning. I brought the car about 12:30 at lunch. So about 5 minuets. He suggested i bring the car in the morning as i drive in and then try to pass again . He said he would do it for free which is good but what if it does not pass again? What could be wrong now? My mechanic ( street mechanic is thrown for a loop. It is a recession and the shops dont’ do free estimates anymore and it takes a long time!! I called around and it is about 75 to 80 just to look at the car. Any smog pros can you kinldy help! of course this is the state of california smog test! I am thinking about putting STP in the car and good gas. Can that help?
this is the third test so someone can please help becuase if it is the ct converter i will have to park the car. I paid the registration but i am afraid i will still get a lovely ticket to add to the car from the police!

It sounds like you have a miss if you changed plugs and your hc is up.. Make sure that the wires are installed in the correct firing order…its hard to diag a car when its not in front of you so thats just something to check..also when was the last time you changed your oil…

Why won’t some catalytic converters not pass the California Emissions Test?

I want to replace my catalytic converter for my 1996 Ford Thunderbird. I just checked Autozone’s website and it says that the catalytic converters they sell pass the federal emissions test but not the California emissions test. What does that mean? I want to replace my catalytic converter without it costing me thousands of dollar. What do I do?

What you need to do is open your hood and locate the label with the engine info, it’s white about 2″ by 4″. On the label it will say this vehicle conforms to federal emissions or it will say this vehicle conforms to federal emissions and emissions in the state of California. If it says the California part, you need to get a California cat. If it says just the federal part, then you dont need a Cali cat. Do a search for Miller Catalytic Converters, they are in San Diego and can ups the cat to your house.
